Before we start, make sure to get a copy of the owner’s manual which you can download at www.sonnysdirect.com and review all the safety information related to this procedure.
Gather the tools and supplies you’ll need which are:
- Safety glasses
- 8-foot step ladder
- 3/4 wrench or 3/4socket ratchet combo
- Tape measure
- Anti-seize
Once you have everything ready the first thing you need to do is:
Note: Adjusting the counterweight is a very important step in wash quality. Typically, we are after 3-4 inches of penetration on the roof and hood of the vehicle and we should wash several vehicles to make that determination rather than washing the same vehicle multiple times. Adjusting the weight is simple but needs to be done carefully and safely as the weight weighs on average 500 lbs.
- Start by taking a measurement of where the weight is at its current position and make some marks on the weldment of the weight and the adjusters so I understand the home position of the weight.
- Then loosen the ½ bolts that hold the counterweight to the adjusters.
- With the wrench or rather, turn the screw slowly till the weight starts to move. If you want to add more washing pressure you move the weight towards the exit end of the tunnel, to decrease wash pressure you move the weight towards the entrance end of the tunnel.
- Only move ¼ inch increments at a time, this is the case where small changes make a big difference.
- Then, tighten the bolts securing the weight in between each adjustment.
- Whenever you service the counterweight it is good practice to apply anti-seize to the acme screw to prevent binding in the future.
